About SCALE

The primary focus of Scalable Computer Architecture Laboratory (scale) is on computer architecture. More specifically, scale has been interested in high-performance and energy-efficient communication between computation and storage resources.

The importance of communication keeps increasing on modern and future computer systems. It is because the density and performance of long wires cannot keep up with the scaling of transistors in a chip using deep-submicron technologies. This makes computation and storage cheap but communication expensive, working as a primary inhibitor of the scalability of contemporary and future manycore computer systems for intelligent infrastructure.

We conduct research for reliable and effective communication solutions for future massively parallel systems (e.g., Datacenters) in light of emerging technologies and applications, such as deep neural networks (DNNs: a key enabler of advances in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence), Big Data (generated from Internet of Things and Social Networks), and Homomorphic Encryption (a enabler for privacy-preserving cloud computing).
